ALF Consultants Certified As A Woman-owned Business Enterprise

West Central Solutions, Inc., (WCS) an Assisted Living Facility Consultant Company received certification as a Woman Business Enterprise (WBE) on March 16, 2016.

“We have always been woman owned and managed,” said Theressa Foster, President. “It is nice to get this certification so that businesses and government entities can be assured that we truly are woman owned and controlled.”

West Central Solutions offers owners of privately held Assisted Living Communities an array of services and expertise to help them so they can work ON their businesses, not IN their businesses.

WBE Certification stands for Woman Business Enterprise and denotes that a woman (or women) has majority ownership and control of a business entity.

West Central Solutions received the certification through the National Women Business Owners Association (NWBOC).

“The application process was time-consuming, yet we hope it will help us in attracting the business of larger corporations and government entities,” said Foster.

Certification goes hand-in-hand with any procurement discussion.  A WBE Certification ensures that the businesses claiming to be woman-owned in fact were woman-owned.   A WBE certification is the only way to confirm to corporations and government agencies the ownership and helps those entities track utilization.

Tracking Encourages Utilization
Certification is the tool by which business participation is tracked, and the tracking provided evidence that the federal procurement dollars were virtually bypassing women-owned businesses.  So remedies were sought in the form of affirmative action programs.

Beginning in the 1960s, efforts were put forth to help “level the playing field”.   In the 60’s the Commission on the Status of Women, the Civil Rights Act and executive orders helped to increase women and minority participation.

The NWBOC web site states, “the 5% federal goal was established in 2000 with the Women’s Equity in Contracting Act that gave the contracting office the ability to restrict competition for women-owned firms, up to 5% of all contracts. The Small Business Administration confirms that it is possible for this to have the effect of being a set-aside, but is not expressly one…  The intent of this program is to encourage procurement officers to utilize women-owned firms at a higher level in both the number of firms awarded contracts and the dollar amounts awarded to them.”

“This WBE Certification is important to WCS because it adds one more layer credibility to our company, ” said Foster.  “We already have Experience and Expertise, now we have Enterprise Certification.”

What One Thing Brings Holiday Cheer to Employees?

Yes!  There is one thing that ALF owners and senior living managers can do to make employees cheer at holiday time.

It is coming to the end of the year and big holiday celebrations. This is the perfect time to spend some relaxed time with your employees, getting to know them. This enhances relationships and builds relationship equity.

So how do you do this when the budget is tight with holiday pay and employees cashing in their vacation time?

Don’t use the time to give speeches…

Well, not unless the speech is short and it is full of thanks.   Maybe, if you had a good year or overcame obstacles it is time to remember how great your team is and what you have accomplished.

But keep it short.

POTLUCKS are affordable ways to increase bonds, build employee engagement and strengthen relationships. All of which reduces employee turnover.

Remember to make holiday time all inclusive. We all think our belief is the right belief yet it is important to remember and respect that others can hold different beliefs. Help all employees feel welcome by including their holidays and traditions throughout the year. More opportunities for POTLUCKS!

And speaking of inclusive…. remember the night staff! Stagger the times of Potlucks or have more than one in a week at holiday time. One for each shift where the owner and/or administrator shows up to chat, give thanks and appreciation.

And what better way to bond that by breaking bread together.

Take pictures and share them on the employee bulletin board.

Don’t feel that you have to sponsor the main course every time.   If you have enough employees there will be plenty of food without a main course.   If you have enough employees, three or more can go together on providing the main course.

Employees will spend this time together off the clock if they normally take an “off the clock break”.   What we have done in the past is make the speech or any presentation “on the clock” (paid) and the eating and chatting part “off the clock” (unpaid).

West Central Solutions wishes for you that your 2016 is Full of Fun Potlucks with great conversations, laughter, and good food.

Thank The Folks Who Care for Our Dying Needs

November 2015 is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month

It is time to thank someone you know who helps people feel as comfortable as possible when they are faced with a serious/terminal illness. Persons facing the illness, whether they are the patient or a family member, need support and tender care.

Those of us involved with Senior Housing and Senior Care understand the value of end of life care that is provided by Palliative Care Specialists.

Did you know…

Study shows that Palliative Care delivers a longer life.

A study in 2010 from Massachusetts General Hospital showed that patients with stage IV lung cancer that were given both oncology care and palliative care. Palliative specialists are focused on preventing and relieving suffering of the patients, and no determination of imminent death is required to get palliative treatment. The specialists discussed with the patients in the study about their goals and priorities if their condition got worse. Those who saw the Palliative Care Specialist stopped chemotherapy sooner and LIVED 25% LONGER!

End of Life Discussions Help

Having the end of life discussion can produce better outcomes. According to the book Being Mortal by Atul Gawande, this is being demonstrated in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Each time a person enters the hospital they are asked to discuss their end of life wishes. Questions like: ”Do you want to be resuscitated if your heart stops?”

The data shows that these La Crosse, WI patients spend less time in the hospital and half as much money during the last six months of their lives.

More peace for the survivors…

Loved ones of those who die from a terminal illness are much less likely to suffer from depression weeks after the death if the patient was under Palliative Care or Hospice Care and their wishes and goals for their end of life care were known.

What is the difference?

According to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization:

Palliative Care – Can be delivered in conjunction with efforts to prolong life. “For the last thirty years, palliative care has been provided by hospice programs. Now this very same approach to care is being used by other healthcare providers, including teams in hospitals, nursing facilities and home health agencies in combination with other medical treatments to help people who are seriously ill.”

Hospice Care – “is based on the belief that each of us has the right to die pain-free and with dignity, and that our loved ones will receive the necessary support to allow us to do so.

  • Hospice focuses on caring, not curing and, in most cases, care is provided in the person’s home.
  • Hospice care also is provided in freestanding hospice centers, hospitals, and nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.
  • Hospice services are available to patients of any age, religion, race, or illness.
  • Hospice care is covered under Medicare, Medicaid, most private insurance plans, HMOs, and other managed care organizations.”

The fact is that none of us live forever. Everyone dies. Some of us die slowly.  Some of it can be messy and painful.  So thank a Palliative Specialist or Hospice volunteer that help us exit this life with some peace.

West Central Solutions Joins Hernando County Chamber

The senior housing consultant company, West Central Solutions, joined the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce in May, 2015.

“We have been active members of the Citrus County Chamber, but our business is not restricted to Citrus County,” said Theressa Foster, President of West Central Solutions.

West Central Solutions provides oversight, consulting and facility management services for privately owned Assisted Living Facilities.

“One of the tasks we help  the facility with is finding the right persons with the needs that fit the facility’s specialties.  In doing this we help the facility and we help the seniors,” said Foster.

The Senior Housing Consultants match the needs of the senior with the expertise and competency of the facility and staff of the assisted living homes.

One of these “match-makers” is Yolanda Lusher.  Lusher is a Senior Housing Consultant for the company.

Yolanda will be networking at the Hernando County Chamber events.  She is interested in making connections with other businesses in the Senior Health Care industry in Hernando County and surrounding areas.  “I am passionate about continuity of care,” Lusher said.  “I am not going to suggest a home for a senior unless I know the facility will meet their needs for a long time.  Moving is stressful, so I want to do what I can to make sure they don’t have to move again in a few months.”

Lusher’s position focuses on helping the family members of seniors.  When the senior starts showing signs of needing assistance with the tasks of daily living, family members may feel stressed.  They family may be from out of town or may not know how to pick a facility that will meet the needs of their loved one.

Lusher is an experienced professional, with a background in assisted living facility administration.  She knows what to look for, and can help families sort through all their choices in Assisted Living Facilities.

“Doctors, health-care workers, and lawyers may find themselves working with a family in need of assisted living for their loved ones.  I want them to know about the valuable service we provide that is free to the senior.  I want them to know that they can feel good about sharing our name with their patients and clients,” said Lusher.

The service to seniors and their families is provided at no cost to the senior.  West Central Solutions receives compensation from the partner facilities once the senior is established in their new home.

West Central Solutions meets the standards set by AHCA, is a member of the Florida Assisted Living Facility and has an “A” rating with the Better Business Bureau.
